Dr. Mattheus Vischer

Dr. Mattheus Vischer started the cochlear implant program 1991 at the university hospital of ENT, HNS in Inselspital Bern and served as head of the cochlear implant center until 2008, as senior consultant and attending teaching surgeon 2009 – 2020 for chief residents, guest surgeons and fellows. Since 1997 he consults in private practice with emphasis on diagnosis of profound deafness of babies, young children, adolescents and adults. He is an attending surgeon in Siloah private hospital, Swiss Medical Network in Gümligen. He is founding member of the core group starting 1998 the newborn hearing screening program in Switzerland. In 2010 he was awarded the PIHA, pioneer of implantable hearing aids by Professor Inge Hochmair and Professor Erwin Hochmair.

After completing research fellowships in auditory physiology at Juntendo University in Tokyo (1987) and at Harvard Medical School in Boston (1989-91) he served as primary investigator in two grants funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (1992-1999) on the effect of electrical stimulation of the auditory pathway. His clinical research is focused on outcome studies to evaluate the benefit of artificial hearing in congenitally deaf babies and young children, specifically in bilateral implanted subjects.
